The Senescence of Spermatozoa, II
1 Zoological Laboratory, Cambridge, and the Marine Station, Millport, N.B.
1. The available data concerning the spontaneous decay in the activity of a sperm suspension are best described without reference to the precise mechanism which brings to an end the active life of individual cells.
2. The facts can be adequately described on the assumption that there exist intracellular units which form a statically heterogeneous system wherein the period of viability of any given unit in any specific environment is fixed and that this period is not the same for all the units of the population. Static variability is, on this hypothesis, a fundamental property of living matter and is not restricted to populations of cells or of complete organisms.
