Fig. 1. Experimental set-up. Bees were trained to forage from a feeder placed at
the end of a tunnel 6 mlong, 8 cm wide and 18 cm high. The only entrance to
the tunnel was at the near end. Between the hive and the feeder, bees flew
through open space for 2.75 m, so that the total distance to the feeder was
slightly less than 9 m. The top of the tunnel was covered with black
fly-screen mesh; the walls and floor were lined with a random arrangement of
squares of two colours. Each square measured 1.1 cm2.
