Cover: During spawning, the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna adopts a unique stacking behaviour, bringing individuals into close proximity, thereby maximising the chances of egg fertilisation. Growth rates in Antarctic ectotherms are known to be slow in comparison with temperate and tropical species, but the underlying causative factors are not fully understood. It now appears that both low rates of protein synthesis and a reduced ability to retain synthesised proteins may limit Antarctic ectotherms to life in the slow lane (see article by K. P. P. Fraser, A. Clarke and L. S. Peck on pp. 2691−2699). The image was taken by Greg Wilkinson of the British Antarctic Survey.
