About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Swifts are extremely aerial birds, spending almost their entire life on the wing. Not only do they perform yearly migration back and forth between Europe and Africa, but they also spend night and day in open airspace. Swifts have a streamlined body and long slender swept wings with a curved leading edge. The wing kinematics and wake velocity fields of a swift flying at cruising speed in a wind tunnel have been studied by Henningsson et al. (pp. 717 −730); the results show that the aerodynamic signatures of the swift differ from previously studied bird species on several points. Photo by P. Henningsson.
